I am very excited to return to, my alma mater, our University of New Mexico to begin the work of listening and gaining an understanding of the current institutional landscape and the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. I have met with members of the faculty, staff council representatives, UNM Foundation members, students, parent association and individual Regents.
I believe UNM, as the state’s premier institution of higher learning, has much to offer with its rich social history, award-winning academic programs, and through its outreach to the communities we strive to serve. I believe there is much to be proud of at UNM including a faculty that ranks in the top third in the nation in scholarly productivity, a student body that make up one of the most diverse learning environments in the country, and state-of-the-art facilities for learning and research.
I also believe that students who are actively connected to the University are generally more successful, and their rates of graduation are much higher. The Dean of Students Office is able to help guide students as they transition to life on campus, learn about and join student organizations, and seek out leadership opportunities at UNM.
The Office of Parents and Families is also a great resource to help you help your student be successful, and I want you to know that you are always welcome to come visit me in Scholes Hall to discuss ways we can improve our service to parents and students, alike. To help the University connect with parents, I encourage you to visit with us during Family Weekend. In addition, I encourage you to look into becoming an active member of the UNM Parent Association and become part of this great partnership.
Again, welcome to the UNM family! We are so happy to have you as part of the great legacy that is the University of New Mexico.
