Parent Talk Series

UNM’s free Parent Talk Series launched in January 2009. The presentations are held the first Wednesday of each month from 6 – 7 p.m. in the Student Services Center (SSC), Dean of Students Conference Room (rm. 260), 2nd floor. The series of talks is sponsored by UNM’s Dean of Students’ Family Connection Program, Parent Relations Office and Parent Association and Extended University. Filmed editions of workshops held since April 2009 are featured on this page.

We would love for you to join us in person if you are able to attend! Students and extended family are welcome! Check‐in begins at 5:30 p.m. Parent Association members are on hand to visit with you about their experiences.

Parking is free in the “patient parking” on the north side of Mesa Vista Hall after 5 p.m. or for $1.75 per hour in the Cornell Parking Struture near Central and Cornell NE. To get to the Student Services Center (SSC) from the Cornell Parking Structure walk north on Cornell Mall. Pass by Popejoy Hall and the Student Union (SUB). At the SUB’s north end, go east to the SSC.

Learn about some new and exciting changes within university advisement designed to improve your student’s academic experience.

October 2009: Learn about tutoring services on campus (video pending).

September 2009: UNM Student Activities Center has more than 400 student organizations — learn what’s out there and also hear from three outstanding students who got involved and active as freshman and beyond.

August 2009: Athletics and Recreational Services  
Lisa Romero of UNM Athletics shares how families can make the most of their “Go Lobos” experience. Eric Boeglin of Recreational Services provides an overview of  recreation programs, gymnasium facilities, intramurals and UNM’s popular Getaway Adventures!

July 2009: Exploring parking and transportation options
Danielle Gilliam of UNM Transportation and Parking Services and Nick Manole of the City of Albuquerque Transit Department share information about campus parking and alternative transportation options for students living on and off campus. From renting zip cars to hopping on the state’s Railrunner, there are ways to get around the city and state on a student budget.

 June 2009: From Facebook to Checkbook: What Every Parent Needs to Know about Information Security in a Digital Age
UNM Information Assurance Director Michael Carr presents information every parent needs to know about information security in a digital age. Carr discusses dangers and pitfalls that students face when sharing information online.

May 2009: Parents, need or want to come back to school? This workshop is for you!
Presenters will include Mary Jane Heinrichs, associate director, graduate school recruitment and admissions; Debby Knotts, director of UNM New Media & Extended Learning (online programs) and representatives from undergraduate school admissions and UNM Continuing Education programs.

April 2009: Career Preparation and Student Jobs, a taped presentation of the workshop presented by Marty Apodaca of UNM Career Services.
