Accounting careers explored

Monday, February 18th, 2008

The Anderson School of Management is teaming up with the New Mexico Society of CPA’s and the Becker CPA Review to highlight why accounting could be an ideal career choice for students. Learn more during a free presentation Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. in the UNM Student Union Building.

Explore the benefits of becoming an accountant, the requirements to become a CPA, what types of jobs are available and the salary and future earning potential of accountants.

One of the greatest benefits is the range of jobs available. Joni Young, chair of the Anderson Accounting Department, says career tracks within accounting are varied.

“Careers include audit services, law enforcement, nonprofit organizations, governmental entities and corporations,” Young says. “Accountants can also be involved in forensic work, litigation support — the possibilities are almost endless.”

Currently the need for accountants in Albuquerque is far greater than the number of qualified people available for hire. For more information about the presentation, contact Suzette Dawson at (505) 8283667 or sdawson@beckerreview.com. To reserve a space go to: Accounting Students.

Marketing students victorious

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Marketing students at the UNM Anderson School of Management took first place again. The undergraduate students in Marketing Professor John Benavidez’ class recently earned first place honors in the Project Acceleration: Subaru Impreza Collegiate Challenge. The news came shortly after the students made their presentation to Subaru executives in New Jersey.

The Subaru executives who served as judges said students did a superior job of quantifying the impact of results they attained after planning and executing a consistent integrated marketing plan.

Benavidez’ classes have a history of coming out on top when competing with other schools.

“This victory adds to the previous successes our MBA teams have had in the Cadillac challenges,” said Benavidez. “It also demonstrates that Anderson marketing students, both undergrad and grad, can design, execute, and present results to top marketing executives in a fashion that is superior to their competition, which includes some of the best schools in the nation.”

The Anderson School of Management was one of eight universities selected for the Subaru Challenge. The program gives students the opportunity to gain real‐world marketing experience while still in school. The focus of the project was for the students to promote the Subaru Impreza product line to their peers: Generation Y.

Students who work on campus are better engaged and more likely to graduate.

If your student is interested in holding a campus job, encourage a stop at the first annual UNM Student Job Fair Friday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Duck Pond.

More than 40 campus departments will be represented with information about entry level and other positions.

Student job information is also online. Many students begin to document experience and activities, public service and community contributions as early as high school. Encourage them to develop this information into a short resume and to keep a list of references handy. Most campus employers are required to check at least two work and/or personal references.

The fair is sponsored by the Graduation Task Force Student Engagement Initiative and UNM’s Career Services.

Job market good for spring graduates

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Employment opportunities are plentiful for UNM spring graduates, said Sheri Wharton, coordinator for Employer Relations at UNM Career Services. Students who pursued degrees in business or civil engineering are in particular demand.

“We always have a number of engineering jobs, but this year we have a lot of accounting firms and businesses hiring UNM students. Sales types of positions are also plentiful,” Wharton said.

In addition to numerous accounting firms, employers such as Lockheed Martin, Lawrence Livermore National Lab, Los Alamos National Lab, the Department of Treasury‐Office of the Comptroller, Naval Audit Service, Goldman Sachs and Raytheon conducted interviews at UNM.

“A lot of opportunities exist for students who fully utilize our services,” Wharton said.

Students should begin employment preparations early, Wharton said. Often a business will want to see the resumes of students who match the criteria in their job description.

“We really encourage students to put their resumes in the e‐Recruiting system, and we’ve seen a rise in the number of students contacting our office,” Wharton said.

From May 1, 2006, to May 1, 2007, there was an increase of 1,108 to 1,651 documents (resumes and cover letters) uploaded into e-Recruiting – a 49 percent increase.
