Students with shared interests live and learn together at UNM

Estaban, LLC studentSince 2001, UNM’s University College has offered the Living & Learning Communities (LLC) to the freshman class.

Each LLC consists of 18 students living in apartment style residence halls. The groups also share an interest in a specific academic area and attend some classes together. Living in this type of atmosphere provides academic and social opportunities to better help students succeed.

“In the LLC, I met people with the same interests as me, people who wanted to study business
and share ideas. By living every day together in the same apartment, we have created friendships for life,” said Esteban Raul Jirón Vaca, a student from the 2007 Business & Management LLC.

LLC focus areas are the Fine Arts, Engineering, Business Management, Architecture and Planning, Humanities and Liberal Arts, Health Sciences, International Studies and Careers, and Biology Studies.

In addition to the shared living environment and common classes, students participate in a low‐key seminar designed to help them bond while exploring issues that come with being a first‐year student. “The LLC seminar was a close environment for us to be able to express our feelings about classes, roommates, and the overall environment, which helped make things easier,” said a student of architecture and planning in 2008.

“I was extremely nervous about entering college because I am the first generation of my family to attend college. The LLC was an amazing asset to my college experience. It helped to immediately introduce me to a group of my peers that were interested in the same field. The fact that I was living with people who I had classes with also helped make the transition from high school to college a lot less intimidating,” said Amanda Salazar, biochemistry major. “I highly recommend the being a part of an LLC to any incoming freshman that asks for my opinion because I know that it has definitely helped to put me on the fast track to achieving my dream.”

“The most beneficial aspects of the LLC were all the opportunities that we were introduced to, and to be involved in different things throughout the semester, both on and off campus,” a Health Sciences professions LLC student noted.
