Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

No fooling, the UNM Parent Connection Workshop Wednesday, April 1, is focused on getting your student a job and on the path to a meaningful career.

Students will get ahead of the Lobo pack by gaining professional experience during the college years. UNM Career Services expert Marty Apodaca will talk to families about ways students can explore interests that may lead to a college major. He will also discuss how to find summer internships, co‐ops, and employment opportunities, and how to land a “real” job after graduation. (more…)

Hallie and parents at Lobo OrientationLobo Orientation is a mandatory two‐day program for all freshmen students, including transfer freshmen with 26 or fewer credits. Incoming fall 2009 freshmen can sign up for Lobo Orientation beginning March 31. It is recommended that students register for the earliest orientation session that they can attend.

We encourage the family members of students attending Lobo Orientation to participate in the Family Connection Program, which runs concurrently with each orientation session and is designed for parents, grandparents, guardians, and other family of incoming freshmen. 100% of last year’s parent participants recommended the program to other parents. Students with shared interests live and learn together at UNM

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Estaban, LLC studentSince 2001, UNM’s University College has offered the Living & Learning Communities (LLC) to the freshman class.

Each LLC consists of 18 students living in apartment style residence halls. The groups also share an interest in a specific academic area and attend some classes together. Living in this type of atmosphere provides academic and social opportunities to better help students succeed.

“In the LLC, I met people with the same interests as me, people who wanted to study business
and share ideas. By living every day together in the same apartment, we have created friendships for life,” said Esteban Raul Jirón Vaca, a student from the 2007 Business & Management LLC.

LLC focus areas are the Fine Arts, Engineering, Business Management, Architecture and Planning, Humanities and Liberal Arts, Health Sciences, International Studies and Careers, and Biology Studies. (more…)

State Department issues Mexico travel alert

Monday, March 9th, 2009

UNM’s Spring Break for 2009 is March 15 – 22. Many students choose to stay on campus to work and study, while others visit out‐of‐town family or head for a vacation destination. Due to our proximity to Mexico, I feel it’s prudent to alert parents that the U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert aimed at U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico. The alert is in effect from Oct. 2008 through Aug. 2009

“While millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year (including thousands who cross the land border every day for study, tourism or business), violence in the country has increased recently,” according to the alert, updated daily on the State Department Web site. “It is imperative that travelers understand the risks of travel to Mexico, how best to avoid dangerous situations, and whom to contact if one becomes a crime victim. Encourage your student read the alert.”
