Parents influence students risky behavior

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

New research shows that parents influence a child’s likelihood of involvement with drugs, alcohol and risky sexual activity even after their child leaves for college.

Brigham Young University scientist Laura Walker’s study, to be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, found that parents’ awareness of what’s going on in their child’s life at college is associated with fewer risky behaviors. Specifically, students with fathers in the loop had a lower likelihood of doing drugs or engaging in risky sexual behaviors.

When mothers were in the know, students were less likely to drink alcohol. The protective effect of mothers’ awareness was more pronounced when the students also felt close to their mom. Under those circumstances, the researchers found that students were less likely to be involved in any of the three risk behavior categories studied: drugs, alcohol and risky sexual activity. President calls for emergency drill

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

“Once again, a senseless tragedy on a university campus reminds us of the fragility of our time here. Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, faculty and staff at Northern Illinois University,” wrote President David Schmidly in his weekly address. The sentiments were sent via email to all students, staff and faculty Feb. 18

“Life has irrevocably changed for them. I’ve sent NIU’s president a message expressing UNM’s condolences and support,” he said.
“What happened last week in Illinois reminds us again that we must continue to work at being prepared for emergencies on campus.”

The president has instructed UNM’s Chief of Police and members of the Emergency Operations Center to implement a campus‐wide drill in the next few days.

“For your own understanding of the process and your peace of mind, I urge you to participate in the drill,” Schmidly said.

The president also urged students and employees to sign up for the TextMe campus‐wide emergency notification system by visting http://my.unm.edu or the emergency notification system link on the homepage. Students have the option to sign up parents or other family for the service.

Accounting careers explored

Monday, February 18th, 2008

The Anderson School of Management is teaming up with the New Mexico Society of CPA’s and the Becker CPA Review to highlight why accounting could be an ideal career choice for students. Learn more during a free presentation Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. in the UNM Student Union Building.

Explore the benefits of becoming an accountant, the requirements to become a CPA, what types of jobs are available and the salary and future earning potential of accountants.

One of the greatest benefits is the range of jobs available. Joni Young, chair of the Anderson Accounting Department, says career tracks within accounting are varied.

“Careers include audit services, law enforcement, nonprofit organizations, governmental entities and corporations,” Young says. “Accountants can also be involved in forensic work, litigation support — the possibilities are almost endless.”

Currently the need for accountants in Albuquerque is far greater than the number of qualified people available for hire. For more information about the presentation, contact Suzette Dawson at (505) 8283667 or sdawson@beckerreview.com. To reserve a space go to: Accounting Students.

Marketing students victorious

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Marketing students at the UNM Anderson School of Management took first place again. The undergraduate students in Marketing Professor John Benavidez’ class recently earned first place honors in the Project Acceleration: Subaru Impreza Collegiate Challenge. The news came shortly after the students made their presentation to Subaru executives in New Jersey.

The Subaru executives who served as judges said students did a superior job of quantifying the impact of results they attained after planning and executing a consistent integrated marketing plan.

Benavidez’ classes have a history of coming out on top when competing with other schools.

“This victory adds to the previous successes our MBA teams have had in the Cadillac challenges,” said Benavidez. “It also demonstrates that Anderson marketing students, both undergrad and grad, can design, execute, and present results to top marketing executives in a fashion that is superior to their competition, which includes some of the best schools in the nation.”

The Anderson School of Management was one of eight universities selected for the Subaru Challenge. The program gives students the opportunity to gain real‐world marketing experience while still in school. The focus of the project was for the students to promote the Subaru Impreza product line to their peers: Generation Y.
